Donde hay un barranquillero hay un carnaval y ese es el caso del Carnaval de Barranquilla en Houston, creado hace 10 años en la Ciudad Espacial con el objetivo de mostrar la gran riqueza histórica, cultural y folclórica que representa el segundo carnaval más importante del mundo, declarado por la UNESCO como patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad, un orgullo para los colombianos.
Durante esta velada podrá conocer a nuestras Reinas del Carnaval, disfrutar de un rico coctel típico costeño, se realizará el lanzamiento de la Revista 10 años del Carnaval de Barranquilla en Houston y disfrutar la película “Polvo Carnavalero”

Un recorrido por la historia del cine argentino. Se prestará atención a los protagonistas (directores, directoras, actores, actrices), los géneros, las películas que marcaron época, los personajes memorables y el reconocimiento internacional otorgado a este arte. Se considerará asimismo la relación entre este arte y la memoria colectiva, y el diálogo que el cine argentino establece con las producciones cinematográficas de otras latitudes.

El dueño de la fábrica de obleas P. Tinto y su esposa Olivia quieren un hijo propio más que cualquier otra cosa en el mundo. Sin embargo, años de intentos los han dejado sin nada más que un par de enanos extraterrestres que viven en la habitación libre. Cuando deciden intentar la adopción, una serie de desviaciones y encuentros casuales resulta en un paciente mental adulto escapado que llega a su puerta con los documentos de adopción en la mano. P. Tinto y Olivia aceptan esto sin dudarlo y lo reciben como su hijo. ¿Puede funcionar este arreglo familiar? // Wafer factory-owner P. Tinto and his wife Olivia want a child of their own more than anything else in the world. Years of trying, however, have left them with nothing but a pair of extraterrestrial midgets living in the spare bedroom. When they decide to try adoption, a series of misroutings and chance encounters results in an escaped adult mental patient arriving at their door with adoption papers in hand. P. Tinto and Olivia accept this without question and welcome him in as their son. Can this family arrangement work?

Los vecinos de uno de los barrios más pobres de Bogotá luchan para evitar el derribo de la casa donde viven, que es propiedad de un millonario sin escrúpulos. Aunque su lucha contra la especulación y la corrupción parece perdida de antemano, ponen en práctica una original estrategia ideada por don Jacinto, un viejo anarquista español. // A lot of people live in an abandoned house; after many years of quiet living, the owner of the house wants them out. They try whatever they can to avoid being evicted, without success. But one of them thinks of a way of saving, at least, their dignity.

Cachimba narra el único momento importante de la vida de Marcos; un insignificante empleado de banco. En el interior de una vetusta casona a punto de derrumbarse, Marcos encontrará una colección de cuadros de dudoso valor artístico; supuestamente la obra de un desconocido pintor chileno que habría tenido un relativo éxito en el París de los años 30. Nuestro héroe siente que, junto a su novia, debe asumir la misión de dar a conocer este “Tesoro artístico”. Cual Quijote latinoamericano, Marcos deberá enfrentar aventuras y desventuras al intentar rescatar su descubrimiento del abrupto interés de oscuros personajes por apropiarse del “Museo” y las “Obras de arte”. // Cachimba narrates the only important moment in Marcos’ life; an insignificant bank clerk. Inside an old house about to collapse, Marcos finds a collection of pictures of doubtful artistic value; supposedly the work of an unknown Chilean painter who would have had relative success in the Paris of the 30s. Our hero feels that, together with his girlfriend, his mission is making renowned this “artistic treasure”. Like a Latin American Quixote, Marcos must face adventures and misadventures when trying to rescue his discovery from the abrupt interest of dark characters how try to appropriate the “Museum” and “Works of Art”.

Did you know that there have been eleven Nobel Literature prizes awarded to authors from Spain and Latin America since the 1900s? And, that most of these authors are widely available in English translation? This webinar will explore the work of these authors, including possible approaches to reading and understanding the works in translation or in Spanish, and the author’s connections with the United States.
Dr. María E. Pérez is a retired professor from the Department of Hispanic Studies of the University of Houston. Since her retirement, she has been active in Hispanic organizations in Houston, including the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston, where she currently serves as a Board Member.
