Houston. Oct. 13, 2023 – The Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston (IHCH) celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in style with a spectacular performance at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. The annual celebration, this time called “Ida y Vuelta,” presented by Danmar Dance Academy, took the audience on a captivating journey through the rich history of music in the Americas, highlighting the cultural exchange between indigenous and European influences.

“Ida y Vuelta,” meaning “round trip,” aptly represented the show’s theme – the interplay of music, culture, and heritage between the Old World and the New World. This brilliant full-scale production, in three acts, transported the audience through time and cultures, showcasing the enduring impact of Spanish immigrants’ music on the Americas.

The performance was not just a celebration of heritage but also a celebration of the ongoing intercultural exchange between Andalusia and Latin America. Music and dance served as a medium for intercultural education, fostering knowledge, acceptance, and tolerance of our multicultural society in the 21st century. The constant exchange across the Atlantic Ocean continues to shape the diverse cultures and identities of the Americas.

“Ida y Vuelta” featured enchanting choreography by Maria Fernanda Urbaez accompanied by live music played by Latin Grammy Award-winning artist Baden Goyo, while Eddy Marcano was the musical director for this play. The brilliant dancers graced the stage in flamboyant and magnificent costumes, adding to the splendor of the production. This timeless performance by Danmar Dance Academy was a fitting tribute to the “Dia de la Hispanidad.”

The master of ceremonies for this exceptional evening was María Esther Méndez, a prominent voice from Univision national radio in Houston, who guided the audience through this musical and cultural journey. The national anthem was sung by Valeria Bautista, a recipient of the Institute’s scholarship program.

The Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston continues to play a vital role in promoting and celebrating the rich heritage of the Hispanic community. “Ida y Vuelta” was a testament of the Institute’s commitment to cultural preservation and education, uniting audiences in the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month.
