In 1915, at the request of the German Goethe General Federation, Sigmund Freud wrote a short text, whose poetic beauty and depth of thought allow it to be considered among the best of his immense work. Vergänglichkeit in the original, it was translated as The perishable in Spanish and On transcience in the English language. Freud wonders there if the transitory character of beauty enhances its value or if, on the contrary, it devalues ​​its importance. His answer is clear and determined: the perishable increases the merit of beauty and of life in general. Freud’s ethical position was always unassailable. The pain that reality can cause us does not authorize us to take refuge in the illusory beliefs that follow the dictates of our desires.

For Freud, the value of beauty and life are independent of their duration, but the contemporary mentality is increasingly intolerant of the idea of ​​finitude. We live under the empire of a paradox. The exhortation to the new, to incessant innovation, is imposed as an inexorable mandate of our times. Trained in the expiration of everything that exists, love, employment, consumer objects, goods in the broadest sense, we disbelieve the duration of things. Current discourse promotes the ephemeral as one of the fundamental features of life, with the purpose that we get ready to turn all aspects of our existence into products that are exposed in a market as voracious as it is volatile. It is love via Tinder, short-term employment contracts, messaging apps and photos that are automatically deleted; it is the vertiginousness of experiences, and the futility of anonymous daily life. But at the same time the transience of life is strongly repudiated, and science and technology are entrusted with the project of an indefinite prolongation of vital time.

Human subjectivity is marked by three essential conditioning factors: language, sexuality and death. The latter has always been poorly received, although in recent decades the set of forces that dominate social discourse has pushed us to rebel against all limits, including that of death, the most implacable of all. In a grandiosity based absurd phrase, Peter Thiel – founder of Paypal – went so far as to affirm that death is the greatest enemy of Humanity and that it must therefore be eradicated.

En el año 1915, a pedido de la Federación General Alemana Goethe, Sigmund Freud escribió un breve texto, cuya belleza poética y profundidad de pensamiento permite considerarlo entre los mejores de su inmensa obra. Vergänglichkeit en el original, fue traducido como Lo perecedero en castellano y On transcience en la lengua inglesa. Freud se pregunta allí si el carácter transitorio de la belleza realza su valor, o si por el contrario devalúa su importancia. Su respuesta es clara y decidida: lo perecedero aumenta el mérito de la belleza y de la vida en general. La posición ética de Freud fue siempre insobornable. El dolor que la realidad puede producirnos no nos autoriza a refugiarnos en creencias ilusorias que siguen los dictados de nuestros deseos.

Para Freud, el valor de la belleza y de la vida son independientes de su duración, pero la mentalidad contemporánea se muestra cada vez más intolerante ante la idea de la finitud. Vivimos bajo el imperio de una paradoja. La exhortación a lo nuevo, a la renovación incesante, se impone como un mandato inexorable de la época. Entrenados en la caducidad de todo lo que existe, el amor, el empleo, los objetos de consumo, los bienes en su sentido más amplio, descreemos de la duración de la cosas. El discurso actual promueve lo efímero como uno de los rasgos fundamentales de la vida, con el propósito de que nos dispongamos a convertir todos los aspectos de nuestra existencia en productos que se exponen en un mercado tan voraz como volátil. Es el amor por Tinder, el contrato laboral de corta duración, las aplicaciones para enviar mensajes y fotos que se borran automáticamente, la vertiginosidad de las vivencias, lo fútil de la cotidianidad anónima. Pero al mismo tiempo la transitoriedad de la vida es fuertemente repudiada, y se confía a la ciencia y a la técnica el proyecto de una prolongación indefinida del tiempo vital.

La subjetividad humana está marcada por tres condicionantes esenciales: el lenguaje, la sexualidad y la muerte. Esta última ha sido siempre mal recibida, aunque en las últimas décadas el conjunto de las fuerzas que dominan el discurso social empuja a rebelarnos contra todos los límites, incluido el de la muerte, el más implacable de todos. En una frase grandiosamente absurda, Peter Thiel -fundador de Paypal- llegó a afirmar que la muerte es el mayor enemigo de la Humanidad y que por ello debe ser erradicada.

In his artistic experiment, Pablo Bobbio shows us what we would prefer to look away from. Life is a succession of ephemeral stages, and organic decomposition generates new forms of existence, some visible, others microscopic. It is amazing to be able to perceive that the atrociousness of putrefaction can contain a singular beauty, a spectrum of textures, colors, luminescences and opacities that show us that even the most horrifying natural phenomena can captivate us with an attraction that defies common sense. But above all, the images that Pablo Bobbio offers us are the visual expression of the memento mori, the “remember that you are mortal” that the slave whispered in Caesar’s ear when, joyful, he returned victorious to Rome. Capturing the different instants of bios, the arc of life, to the extreme of the return to the inanimate, is the experiment to which the artist summons us. Photographs and objects trapped in the transparent eternity of resin look at us. They look at us from their agonizing muteness to remind us of what awaits us.

En su experimento artístico, Pablo Bobbio nos muestra aquello ante lo cual preferiríamos desviar la mirada. La vida es una sucesión de etapas efímeras, y la descomposición orgánica genera nuevas formas de existencia, algunas visibles, otras microscópicas. Es asombroso poder percibir que lo atroz de la putrefacción pueda contener una belleza singular, una espectro de texturas, colores, luminiscencias y opacidades que nos demuestran que incluso los fenómenos naturales más espeluznantes pueden cautivarnos con una atracción que desafía el sentido común. Pero sobre todo, las imágenes que Pablo Bobbio nos ofrece son la expresión visual del memento mori, el “recuerda que eres mortal” que el esclavo susurraba al oído del César cuando presa del júbilo retornaba vencedor a Roma. Capturar los diferentes instantes de bios, el arco de la vida, hasta el extremo del retorno a lo inanimado, es el experimento al que el artista nos convoca. Las fotografías y los objetos atrapados en la eternidad transparente de la resina nos miran. Nos miran desde su mudez agónica para recordarnos lo que nos aguarda.
