Celebrating Venezuelan Folk Music with Eddy Marcano

Apollo Chamber Players welcomes Latin Grammy-winning violinist Eddy Marcano with Baden Goyo (piano) and Sebastian Marcano (cuatro) for a program featuring new compositions and arrangements of Venezuelan folk music. Continuing our Bartók string quartet cycle, we highlight the Hungarian composer’s exuberantly primal fourth string quartet, considered by many to be among his greatest compositions and most deeply connected to his lifelong exploration of folk music.

Círculo de lectura activa.

La lectura nos permite ver el mundo de una manera distinta, encontrar ese pedazo en el universo que nos hace falta. Los libros nos muestran que se puede encontrar el amor en un sonido o en una flor.

El círculo está centrado en la lectura y análisis de textos de ficción en español. El ejercicio del círculo literario pretende brindar nociones prácticas que permitan el acercamiento crítico a géneros literarios en español.

El ejercicio de leer nos pertenece a todos, hayamos o no estudiado formalmente.

Continuamos en febrero con nuestra reunión del círculo de lectura activa con el libro “Aura” de Carlos Fuentes, el sábado 15 de febrero, estaremos charlando y compartiendo apreciaciones sobre este libro.

Recuerda llevar tu vaso, tu bebida preferida y algo de comer para compartir con el grupo.

Presentación de la obra del escritor René Rodríguez Soriano

“No les guardo rencor, papá”

Novela más reciente del escritor dominicano René Rodríguez Soriano, publicada simultáneamente en Santo Domingo, España, Estados Unidos y Argentina en el 2019, narra los días finales de la dictadura de Rafael L. Trujillo en su patria. Es una historia conocida, pero el estilo subyugante con el que el autor va concatenando los hechos y la interacción de los personajes hacen que el lector se mantenga pegado al libro hasta llegar a la última página. Tres voces se entrelazan, atan nudos y se deslizan paralelamente para contarnos una historia que de tan terrible pareciera fantasía.

René Rodríguez Soriano (Constanza, RD, 1950) escritor, editor y docente universitario dominicano; egresado en comunicación social de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Ha sido reconocido en plataformas como el periodismo, la publicidad y la producción de materiales para radio televisión y cine. Ha recibido importantes galardones como el Talent Seekers International Award 2009-2010, el Premio UCE de Poesía 2008, el Premio UCE de Novela 2007, el Premio Nacional de Cuentos José Ramón López de República Dominicana (1997) y el Casa de Teatro (1996), entre otros. Desde 1998 reside en Estados Unidos1​ desde donde, mediante un continuo desplazamiento por prestigiosos centros académicos desarrolla una ardua labor de difusión y proyección de la literatura iberoamericana; desde el 2005 edita y coordina mediaIsla2​, revista literaria convertida, hoy por hoy, en sitio de referencia obligada para los hacedores y estudiosos más destacados de nuestras letras

Women, Essence & Origin – Opening Reception @ Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston

With the purpose of celebrating International Women’s Day, artists Annia Guillén, Hilda Rueda and Carolina Dalmas are bringing together the art exhibition Women, Essence & Origin that will run from March 6 to April 6, 2020.

The exhibition portrays women of all ages, races and walk of life by reflection on their essence as pillars of humanity. The artists present what constitutes an abstract or literal interpretation of women and their core values.

Various mediums are utilized. Annia, originally from Costa Rica, works with pigments on silk and oils. Hilda, a native of Colombia, uses acrylics and oils and paints from life models. Carolina Dalmas, from Argentina is using soft pastels on sandpaper.

Join us for the Opening Cocktail Reception, on Saturday March 7th, 5pm to 7:30pm with life music and hors d’oeuvres. In addition, 15% of the sales will be donated to Casa Argentina de Houston to help women in need.

At the Exhibition Closing Event on Saturday, April 4th, 2020, 5pm to 7:30 pm, a piece of art will be auctioned. All the proceeds will benefit Canopy- Elevating life above Cancer. These events are free and open to the general public.

Con la voz de Fernando Pirez, referente tanguero uruguayo contemporaneo.

About this Event

FERNANDO PIREZ

Born in the city of Montevideo, Oriental Republic of Uruguay, he emerges in the talent round of the renowned FUN FUN Bar in the old city where the contemporary tango referents frequented, has a powerful and sentimental voice that cradles tango as few is the winner of several competitions of singers in the Rio de la Plata.

He integrates the cast of voices of La Misa Tanguera and is La Voz del Tango in the Show PASION LATINA for the World Show.

He performed at the Lincoln Center in New York, the Opera Theater in Paris and the Czech Museum in Houston among other settings. I premiere the Tanguera Mass at the Cathedral of San Fernando de Maldonado, and at the Florencio Sanchez de Paysandu Theater (Uru) and I sing twice at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NY and at the Newark Nj cathedral this last year. He also performed at the Insitute of Hispanic Culture this past June with the “Tributo a Gardel Show”.

Nacido en la ciudad de Montevideo, Republica Oriental del Uruguay, surge al canto en la ronda de talentos del reconocido Bar FUN FUN de la Ciudad vieja donde frecuentaban los referentes tangueros contemporaneos, posee una voz potente y sentimental que acuna el tango como pocas es ganador de varios concursos de cantantes en el Rio de la Plata .

Integra el elenco de voces de La Misa Tanguera y es La Voz del tango en el Show PASION LATINA por el mundo.

Se presento en el Lincoln Center de New York , El teatro Opera de Paris y el Museo Checo de Houston entre otros escenarios.

Estreno la Misa Tanguera en La Catedral de San Fernando de Maldonado , y en el Teatro Florencio Sanchez de Paysandu ( Uru) y canto 2 veces en La Catedral de Saint Patrick de NY y en la catedral de Newark Nj este ultimo 2019 . Tambien se presento en el Insitituo de Cultura Hispana de Houston el pasado Junio con el Tributo a Gardel.
