A un año de sus bodas de plata, y después de una exitosa première en Rice University, Gente de teatro vuelve a presentar “Madenusa”, de la autora argentina Claudia Soroka. Con su estreno en los Estados Unidos, la obra ofrece un espejo de “Made in Lanús”(“Made in Argentina”) de Fernández Tiscornia, presentada en el 2011, a la vez que nos muestra una de las tantas imágenes del inmigrante. Esta vez, Mabel y Osvaldo, instalados en USA desde hace años, recibirán a “la Yoli” y “el Negro” (*) de Argentina para reanudar lo que la vida interrumpió. ¿Qué sucede cuando el mundo que dejamos allá viaja y vuelve hacia nosotros? Con gran talento y con la emoción de lo vivido, la autora nos entrega un texto fresco y divertido sobre la variada experiencia de dejar el país de origen y enfrentar los dilemas de otra cultura. La obra de Soroka revive una y otra vez los cuestionamientos de los que emigran y su impacto en los vínculos familiares, en la identidad personal y cultural de aquellos que se fueron hace tiempo y de los recién llegados.

Claudia Soroka nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina. En 1982 emigró a Houston, donde reside actualmente con su familia. En 1985, Soroka tuvo la oportunidad de asistir a la puesta en escena de “Made in Argentina” de Nelly Fernández Tiscornia. La obra fue de gran influencia en el inicio de su carrera artística a la vez que le demostró la necesidad cultural de presentar teatro latinoamericano en Houston. En 1987 comenzó su actividad escénica como miembro de grupos y talleres, y en 1988 “Esperando la carroza” de Jacobo Langsner marcó su debut teatral. Desde entonces ha participado en diversas puestas teatrales incluyendo el film “The Marianao Kid” de Joseph Rumbaut. En 1995, junto con Marcela Salas y Esteban Gago fundó Gente de Teatro, un grupo cuya misión es difundir el teatro latinoamericano y español en su idioma original. Soroka no es solo Directora Ejecutiva de la organización cuya labor cuenta ya con casi 25 años ininterrumpidos de producción teatral, sino que ha participado como actriz en cada una de las obras presentadas. En el 2011, Gente de Teatro presentó con gran éxito “Made in Argentina” de Fernández Tiscornia en el Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. En el papel de “la Yoli,” Soroka completó el círculo de su carrera artística al actuar en la obra que había sido su inspiración original. Poco después se propuso un nuevo desafío: ser autora teatral. El resultado de tal labor es “Madenusa.” Sin ser necesariamente autobiográfica, la obra refleja las vivencias y las vicisitudes de dejar atrás el viejo mundo “conocido” y adaptarse a uno totalmente nuevo. Ese fue el impulso creativo de “Madenusa,”que presentará en Houston desde el 31 de octubre hasta el 3 de noviembre.

A world premiere and prequel to the mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, El Milagro del Recuerdo/The Miracle of Remembering brings audiences back to where it all began, Michoacán, Mexico. Set during Christmas, the opera lovingly explores the themes of traditions and familial bonds while it’s characters deal with life-changing decisions and dream of something more.
By joining librettist and director Leonard Foglia, Mexican composer Javier Martínez continues the legacy of mariachi opera established by his late father, José “Pepe” Martínez.

Celebrating Venezuelan Folk Music with Eddy Marcano
Apollo Chamber Players welcomes Latin Grammy-winning violinist Eddy Marcano with Baden Goyo (piano) and Sebastian Marcano (cuatro) for a program featuring new compositions and arrangements of Venezuelan folk music. Continuing our Bartók string quartet cycle, we highlight the Hungarian composer’s exuberantly primal fourth string quartet, considered by many to be among his greatest compositions and most deeply connected to his lifelong exploration of folk music.

Alegría (‘joy’ in Spanish) takes audiences at the heart of a once glorious kingdom now in decay led by the king’s fool and a dusty aristocracy. Carried by an intangible wind of change, an emerging movement from the streets strives to shake this established order, instilling hope and renewal to bring light and harmony to their world. With its joyful spirit, Alegría is a vital, energizing force driven by a thirst for a brighter tomorrow.
In true Cirque du Soleil fashion, Alegría unfolds soul-touching clown antics and remarkable acrobatic performances in a whimsical and immersive visual universe. Perched at the top of the Big Top, gymnasts fly from one High Bar to the next, and leap into the void to reach the hands of mighty catchers suspended on a cradle swing. Using all her limbs, an artist dazzles with her ability to spin and twirl a multitude of hoops while contorting her body with otherworldly ease. Other Jaw-dropping highlights include a daredevil Fire Knife Dancer eating, breathing, touching and juggling with flames; a sublime couple on Aerial Straps soaring through a delicate snowstorm; and fourteen tumblers bouncing off a Powertrack (trampoline tracks) embedded into the stage to perform crisscrossing series of daring somersaults.
