HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DOROTHY E. FARRINGTON CARAM
(January 14, 1933-August 8, 2025)
The Institute of Hispanic Culture (IHCH) celebrates the life of Dorothy Caram and bids farewell with deep gratitude and emotion to an incredible human being who put her signature on this Institute from its very beginnings. Dorothy was the force, the sparkle, and the heart of the IHCH for many years. When it finally became a non-profit organization in 1967, her
husband, Dr. Pedro Caram, became the first president. She helped her husband fulfill the dual mission of the Institution: to inspire the many Latin American ethnic groups that reside in Houston, Texas through education and cultural events. During her own presidency in 1983, Dorothy was instrumental in creating the folkloric festival named “Dia de la Hispanidad,” which continues to this day at the Miller Outdoor Theater. That year, she brought the famous Mexican actor Mario Moreno, “Cantinflas,” and in the following years she brought many other famous international celebrities.
Dorothy was a mentor, advisor, creator, and, more than anything, she was the dearest friend to all of us members of the Institute. She left a legacy for us to accomplish, which is: Hispanic culture is a treasure that we must protect and share because through art and education we can become a more fair and compassionate society.
Dorothy, we will never forget your mission and call to service that the Institute be the umbrella and space where all the ethnic and Latin American groups can join together. Your words, your actions, and your wishes are being accomplished in each cultural event: music, painting, dance, in each festival and gala, and in each smile from a student who receives a scholarship from the Institute. We will always be next to you building on your ideals. Thank you for everything.
MEMORIAL SERVICES:
The Rosary will be Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 4pm at Geo H. Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Dr. Mass will be Thursday, August 21 at 10am at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, followed by the burial at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In honor of Dr. Caram’s service to education and her passion for vibrant celebration of Latin culture, carried through to this year’s 60th Anniversary, The Institute would be deeply grateful for your donations to support this year’s upcoming 43rd “Dia de la Hispanidad” to be held September 27 at Miller Outdoor Theater and dedicated to its founder, Dorothy Caram, and we look forward to seeing everyone there.
HOMENAJE A LA VIDA Y LEGADO DE DOROTHY E. FARRINGTON CARAM

El INSTITUTO de CULTURA HISPANA (ICH) celebra y despide con gratitud y emoción a un ser extraordinario que marcó la historia de nuestra institución. Dorothy Caram fue la fuerza, la chispa y el corazón del Instituto por muchos años. Cuando el ICH se convirtió en una organización sin fines de lucro en 1967, ella ayudó a su marido, primer presidente del mismo, el Dr. Pedro Caram, a realizar la misión educativa y cultural de ser una herramienta para fomentar y dar a conocer a todas las diferentes etnias latinoamericanas que conforman y conviven en nuestra ciudad de Houston. Durante su propia presidencia en 1983, Dorothy dejó una huella de fundamental importancia al crear el Festival Folklórico, “Dia de la Hispanidad,” que hasta la fecha se lleva a cabo anualmente en el Miller Outdoor Theater. En la primera ocasión, contó con la presencia del famoso actor Mario Moreno, “Cantinflas” y años siguientes de otros artistas mundialmente reconocidos.
Dorothy fue mentora, consejera, impulsora y más que nada querida amiga. Nos dejó como legado a seguir, que la cultura hispana es un tesoro que debemos proteger y compartir, y que el arte y la educación son medios para alcanzar un futuro más equitativo y humano.
Dorothy: Nunca olvidaremos tus palabras de que el Instituto es el resguardo o el ámbito donde se acogen y vienen a hacer nido todas las etnias hispanoamericanas. Tus palabras, tus acciones y tus deseos se cumplen en cada evento cultural, de arte, pintura, música; en cada festival y gala, en cada conferencia literaria y en cada sonrisa de un estudiante que recibe nuestras becas. Estaremos siempre a tu lado construyendo tu ideal. Gracias por todo.

Lewis and Sons, 1010 Bering Dr. Jueves, 21 de agosto, 10 am, Misa en la Iglesia St Vincent de Paul, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Cementerio Forest Park Lawndale una vez terminada la Misa. En honor del servicio de la Dra. Caram de parte de la education y su pasión por celebrar la cultura Latina, hasta nuestro anniversario de 60 años, el Instituto estaría profundamente agradecido de recibir contribuciones para apoyar al “Dia de la Hispanidad” pautado para el 27 septiembre en el Teatro Miller dedicado a nuestra fundadora Dorothy Caram y donde esperemos verles a todos.
