Dr. Andrea I. Camps was president of the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston in 1990, the year that the organization celebrated its 25th Silver Anniversary. The IHCH was then located in a large mansion at 5 Chelsea Blvd, off of Montrose Blvd. That year there were over 330 paid members. One of the last IHCH Directories was published and sent to all the members that year. One of the elegant IHCH cultural events and receptions included a visit by renown opera star, Plácido Domingo. At the sold out 1990 Noche de las Americas Gala, chaired by Luisa Trujillo, the surprise guest entertainer was Rafael, from Spain.
The Dia de la Hispanidad in Miller Outdoor Theatre honored Argentina and the guest celebrity was famous singer of stage and movies, Libertad Lamarque.
Having a doctorate in Spanish American Literature, she held professional positions at both the University of Houston and Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. Andrea was most interested in serving the Houston community through a wide range of programs and initiatives. Many scholarships were awarded to high school and college students as well as special annual scholarships to teachers of Spanish to attend summer studies in accredited programs abroad.
Dr. Enrique Camps, a gynecologist/obstetrician, deceased husband of Andrea Camps, was very supportive of all the cultural, educational and social activities that were sponsored by the IHCH during her presidency. The Camps , who migrated to the USA from Cuba in 1961, are survived by two daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends and family relatives. Funeral Mass was held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on April 4,2018.
